Call Me

Can You Hear Me Now?

What's an interactive conference without full time interactivity? ATT execs had to answer that question when the iPhone cloud over Austin this week grew so thick with connectivity that they had to send the troops in and upgrade their 3g system; pronto!

Having just arrived in Austin for the last few days of SXSW Interactive (the fast growing little cuz to SXSW Music), I promptly checked into the new ATT Conference Center and Hotel and heard everyone buzzing about "the iPhone Problem".

It was bound to happen. SXSW has spawned entire new industries over the unquenched desire to know, literally, where everyone and everything is during every second of the week. Where are the best parties? The shortest lines? Whose speaking on what panel? How many songs did Loney Dear play? What did M. Ward eat for lunch? Who has free Red Bull and Vodka? How many people are wearing large white sunglasses?

All of this information can be at your fingertips, whether you are Twittering, IM'ing, texting, *sched-ing or just being completely old fashioned and picking up your cell phone and calling your friends...provided of course that your network of choice is working. And for the nerd herds (and I use that term affectionately) that are here for SXSW Interactive, it's all about the iPhone and it's oh so many Apps.

It seems ATT got the problem fixed before the 2000 bands and their 100,000 disciples arrive in force for four days of music because Dear Lord, where would we be with  the 24/7 connection? We'd be forced to adopt a whole new SLO  Music movement and actually talk to each other in person and  experience the moment at hand without passing it on. Wouldn't that just suck?

(p.s. I actually prefer the Nancy Wilson version of this song so Twitter or text me with an Mp3 url if you have one! Yes, I am conflicted.)
