Heartless Bastards. The Real Guitar Heroes.
For some reason "garage band" has become the popular metaphor for many of today's groups that are playing good old fashioned blues rock. I doubt many of these bands have ever played in their garage, or any one else's for that matter, but somehow the label connotes a grittier, scrappier image.
Heartless Bastards is one of these bands but it's the only one which features a female on lead vocal and guitar. A female that would make Janis Joplin AND Robert Plant proud (and I bet will have a few more girls picking up their electric's). Erika Wennerstrom and her garage mates hail from Dayton, Ohio and their new album The Mountain just might move them up into the rarified space occupied by fellow Ohioans The Black Keys.
They are playing Stubb's in Austin next Wednesday, 3/18 in a killer SXSW lineup that goes like this:
9pm: Ladyhawke
10pm: Heartless Bastards
11pm: The Avett Brothers
12am: The Decemberists
Can't wait to hear Erika belt out this tune to a fired up opening night crowd at SXSW '09!
