Joe And The Culture Mix.
My last night in Harbour Island was spent in the bar at The Landing, a gem of a small hotel with a fabulous restaurant right on Bay Street. It's one of those bars that could have hosted Lord Mountbatten or Bob Marley and both would have felt equally at home. It's filled with old colonial style furniture, deep red walls covered with black and white photographs and votive candles twinkling behind star fish.

I was there to see Denaldo Bain play guitar and sing an acoustic set of some of his original songs and to meet Ithalia Johnson; one of the rising stars of the local music scene in The Bahamas ... but as the night wore on, I found myself talking reggae with Ithalia and her husband Joe. As much music as we absorb here at The MusicFile, I confess to being pretty ignorant in terms of what's current in the world of reggae, roots, dub, and the combination thereof. Other than my love of Matisyahu, Culture and a few Marley's, I quickly realized how out of it I was.
Joe promised to burn me a mix and deliver it to my rental house by 11 the next morning and he was true to his word. What arrived was a CD in an envelope with the names of the songs, bands and countries they are from hand written on the front. It was entitled "The Culture Mix". Gosh, it's been a long time since I had gotten a handwritten playlist and it made me nostalgia for the days when this was the norm. Something about it makes it feel special-that little extra effort goes a long way.
I tucked it into my suitcase and have been playing it non stop since I got back. This is one of my favorite tracks on the playlist, from an artist that Joe raved about who's from New Orleans but lives in Bermuda. He released his debut CD in 2007.
Thanks Joe!
