Marco Benevento takes the concept of The Bad Plus' penchant for jazz covers of rock songs and moves it waaaaay down the field, filling the songs with the looping, ambient and experimental touches normally reserved for the electronica and noise movements.
But an instrumental, post-rock, experimental jazz cover of one of My Morning Jacket's most beloved songs? Come on. I had my doubts but I was proven wrong. It is one very cool five and half minutes of music.
A jazz musician by training, Benevento has become known for his groundbreaking use of circuit bending from electronic toys and highly distorted acoustic piano; let alone what he does with a Hammond organ, a synthesizer and some serious manipulation of peddles. The result is something that's not jazz and not noise but entirely new. It took me a minute before I could pin point the song as "Golden" but once my ear caught up, I just let myself go with the flow and smiled (ditto with his cover of The Knife's "Heartbeats").
The track is from his second album which was just released last week. If you are looking for some seriously chill music to really engage your mind and your senses, pick this up.
