Saturday Morning Flashback:1980!
Is this the last train to Ska-ville? Might this be the final time I get to see this legendary band?
These were the questions running through my head last night at the sold out, packed to the rafters, English Beat show at Irving Plaza.
Lest you doubt that there is an over 40 crowd willing to shell out the money to dance their butts off on a Friday night, I assure you, you are wrong. Longtime fans mixed with an under 30 crowd who no doubt understand this band's influence on countless acts of today (can you say Vampire Weekend?) If you didn't get high on the skunk weed that was wafting through the air, you were surely high on the music.
Dave and the boys blasted thru all of their hits plus a few from General Public and The Specials. Feeding off of the crowd's energy, they closed out with this track; their biggest hit. I thought the place was gonna explode.
My friend and MusicFile contributor K. Snow turned to me and said "man I love the 80's". We both just burst out laughing and continued to dance.
