Girl Talk : Give Me A Beat

"SWF over 40 seeks relationship with genius Electronica/Hip Hop DJ. Let's spend long nights together at the sound board shattering musical stereotypes"
Girl Talk is DJ Greg Gillis. The mere fact that his latest album is short listed for my Record Of The Year is the stuff that makes music demographers scratch their balding heads.
It's also a testament to why the :30 sound clip preview that iTunes, Amazon and just about everyone else employs is completely irrelevant in today's music world. Girl Talk is nothing but sound clips. Sound clips of other people's music with rap fragments laid on top; 315 of them on this one album if I counted correctly. It's a lawsuit waiting to happen. In fact, it's released on record label Illegal Art so nobody's trying to fool anybody here. And it just happens to be brilliant.
I have to give the nod to CoreyDu's strong recco for putting me over the edge on this one. I had listened to a few clips and didn't quite get it. Then one night I just let the whole 53 minutes play through and found myself going back trying to find which track had that little Carole King snippet in it, and hey didn't I hear like 5 notes from "Purple Haze" somewhere? And was that really Procol Harum's "Whiter Shade of Pale" at the beginning of #3?
I am generally not a big hip-hop fan but this is like some musical Rorschach test-drive down memory lane that I want to take over and over again. It's really just one long DJ mashup (there are no breaks between tracks but you can download them separately) so picking one is insanely difficult but "Give Me A Beat" makes me smile every time. When Carole King's "It's Too Late" kicks in at the :52 mark, you'll get it!
Here are the samples used on "Give Me A Beat" and Wikipedia now has the whole track by track breakdown.
