Jose Gonzalez : Heartbeats
Tuesday, October 28, 2008

The Madison Sq. Art Program in New York kicked off it's' new installation last weekend called Pulse Park. The exhibit is the inspiration of Montreal artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer who was inspired by listening to the very different heartbeats of his twins during his wife's pregnancy. He felt they created a type of music and set about to bring that music to life through, well, lights.
The installation captures the heartbeats of up to 200 people at once and translates the beats into a a mesmerizing, pulsing, light show. Participants contribute their own heartbeats by placing their hands on two grip bars, similar to what you might find in a health club.
The show needs no music to make it utterly compelling but if it did, this song would be it's patron saint. I have always felt that Jose Gonzalez captures the essence of "sharing different heartbeats in one night" in this beautiful song. Perhaps these two artists were separated at birth?
The installation runs daily from sundown to 10pm thru November 17, '08. I want to see it in the snow. I'll bring my iPod.
