Margot & The Nuclear So and So's : Broadripple Is Burning

It's CMJ week here in NYC which is, as they so aptly describe, a music marathon....hundreds and hundreds of bands jammed into 5 days. Red Bull is the beverage of choice as even one night of CMJ'ing can entail 6 bands at a single venue. It's the musical hunt for the next big sound and like it's Austin cousin SXSW, it can be daunting.

I'm a big proponent  of the venue as king and prefer to focus on shows that are playing at my favorite musical haunts across the city. The king of NYC venues for me has always been Bowery Ballroom and we headed there last night for a CMJ showcase of bands that culminated around 1am with Margot & The Nuclear So and So's. The great thing about Bowery is that most of the bands hang out downstairs in the bar when they aren't playing so I got the opportunity to chat with them before the show and learn some good news. After some "artistic differences", it looks like Epic will release their album Animal in CD  and Mp3 form in January '09 (to date it is only available on Vinyl). This album's "cousin", Not Animal, is available for download now.

The band really comes across more as a collective when you see them live; they crowded onto the stage (I think I counted 9 of them?) like a calmer Arcade Fire and proceeded to deliver one of the best sets I've seen in a very long time.

And yes, we've already hyped this band recently but this, the last song of their encore which lead singer Richard Edwards performed acoustically, is just so damn good that it deserves it's own spotlight. It's a song that will stay with you for days and days.
