Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood

Since I am blogging this week about current music that may have a wider appeal than many assume- primarily because of the tendency of so many of today's best bands to draw on the sounds of the 60's, 70's and 80's- I can't let the week go by without talking about one of today's best band's; the one with the silly name.

The first time I heard Brooklyn's Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, one word escaped from my lips as Losaida and I hopped and danced incessantly around our NYC office after a late night working and drinking a few beers: Talking Heads.

Not since 77's brilliant "Psycho Killer" had I felt such energetic yet original dance punk. CYHSY hit the Brooklyn scene in 2005, selling out their self produced album on-line just by word of mouth. They were one of the first big DIY bands to prove the power of the internet. But would their music only appeal to highly engaged 20 somethings? I liked it a lot but recognized they were unlikely to get any mainstream radio play in today's market- and the name didn't help.

That said, they have continued to grow their fan base and are considered a slightly left of center alternative band- just like Talking Heads were back in the late 70's before Little Creatures made them a household name. Will the same fate bestow CYHSY? All I know is that at last year's Lollapalooza, my over 50 friend (and borrowed photographer) Jeff, proclaimed them his favorite band of the weekend. The photo above is his.
