Sweet Inspiration

My Grammys Hangover...

Did you know Derek Trucks won a Grammy last night? I bet not. As I went through the list of winners again this morning, I realized that 90% of the artists that I admire- who were either nominated and/or won-never made it anywhere near the telecast. I think this is a crime. Somebody keep me honest here, but I think I counted 18 live performances but only 10 awards given out. That's just half ass.

How many people would have loved to see Bela Fleck perform from his Throw Down Your Heart African project (which won 2 Grammys), or Levon Helm from The Band for Christ's sake? Or Derek Trucks? Or France's red hot Pheonix? All winners you had to look hard to find. How about some Jazz? Or Blues? Or World Music?

It seems like the Grammys have just become a giant booty call for over the top bad pop and hip hop performances and a blatant promotional tool for CBS shows and parent company Viacom's films. I think music fans deserve more credit than that (and judging by the thousands of Grammy Tweets I saw last night and this morning, I am not alone). We had some fun with it, tweeting away during the telecast:

@themusicifle The Grammys sound really good if you turn the sound off and play Spoon's new album really loud.

a few other 'Grammys Suck' notables...

@poptarts New CBS drinking game, one shot for every CSI or NCIS commercial...you'd be wrecked in ten minutes
@dskinner The Grammys will be so much better when the music being produced doesn't suck.
@poptarts why is Celine Dion helping to remember Michael Jackson??? anyone???
@joshuadufford Give Taylor Swift any songwriting award you want, but stop giving her best singer/performance/entertainer awards. She can't sing on key!
@rancour I've just about lost faith in music...I really can not dumb myself down enough to listen to radio friendly crap...grammys can suck a ...
@hpanic Granted, music did suck this year, but is any awards show more irrelevant than the Grammys?
@officialthrice There is a lot of suck at the Grammy's. That Jamie Foxx thing was the most tasteless thing I've seen in a while.
@pairaces What institutionalized household annual event has completely lost its sense of worth and identity? #grammys
@skwerl I watched the grammys on twitter. and don't need to see it, or any parts of it, again in any format.

Are more people watching just so they can participate in the immediacy of Tweetdom back lash? The ratings are estimated to be up over 30% from last year and yet, so is the criticism. I'd estimate a #grammys Twitter search is running about 2 to 1 negative. That's a lot of hate. And I find it fascinating. Are ratings that elicit strong negative feedback worth less?

I'm gonna keep a close tweet eye on this as the day progresses... they're still coming in:

And in case you missed it, and it would have been easy to do so, Derek Trucks did win his first Grammy yesterday for Best Contemporary Blues Album, besting his also incredibly talented wife Susan Tedeschi in the same category. After last night, I could use some of their sweet inspiration!
