And We Keep Rollin Down The Fast Lane...

Ah resolutions! 'Tis the time of year when we hunker down and swear we're gonna make some changes come January 1st. Stop smoking or drinking or eating or procrastinating or whatever it is we do that fills up our emptiness. There are a million reasons why quitting these things makes sense and a million more why they are so hard to quit.

No song better captures that than Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard's "Reasons To Quit" and no better cover exists than the one released this year by Matthew Houck (aka Phosphorescent). His tribute album of Willie Nelson covers,To Willie, was one of the great overlooked records of 2009. It made my list and it's not too late to make yours.

There's a weariness and depth to Houck's interpretation of these Nelson gems that give them a heft missing from the originals. In the process Phosphorescent has managed to create new and important classics. When he sings "And we keep rollin' down the fast lane like two young men feelin' no pain, and the reasons to quit gettin' bigger every day", you can actually feel a collective lump in the world's throat.
