Free Is Good! Free Is Very, Very Good!
When DJ Losaida speaks, I listen. The left coast of The MusicFile had just been waxing on the merits of Dead Man's Bones when I stumbled upon this song on Anti- Records fall 2009 sampler on Amazon. It's one of 12 FREE! tracks from the label's roster with notable standouts from Neko Case, Alec Ounsworth (of Clap Your Hands, Say Yeah) and Jason Lytle (of Grandaddy).
Anti- is one cool record label and this is a great way to sample some bands that might be New To You...like Dean Man's Bones...which is the collaboration between actor Ryan Gosling and his friend Zach Shields (with some help from The Silverlake Children's Choir).
What started out as a potential soundtrack for a new sci-fi horror flick has ended up launching a whole new side career for Gosling, complete with a 15 city tour leading up to Halloween (that I somehow completely missed).
No matter. It's spooky cool music that will make you feel like a great big kid again, no matter what time of year.
