Saturday Morning Flashback: Paris,1951
This week's flashback comes from a brand new soundtrack...to one of the best films I've seen this year.
The Education is about a young girl living in London circa 1961 who must choose between an Oxford Education and a glamorous life with an older man and her love for all things Parisian. Not only will you be captivated by young Carey Mulligan's performance, you will sit there trying to pinpoint many of the fabulous songs used in the movie...including standouts by Melody Gardot, Beth Rowley and Madeleine Peyroux.
But the artist that will blow you away is this one. I kept trying to place her voice. Not Edith Piaf. Not Nina Simone. Not Josephine Baker. Who was she?
Turns out it is Juliette Greco, an 82 year old French Singer and actress who I confess I wasn't familiar with. Hopefully this movie will have the same effect on all who see it... to take a bit of time and seek her out.
This song, originally from Greco's 1951 album (for the soundtrack for the Julien Duvivier film) plays while Mulligan's character Jenny lies on her bedroom floor with an old turntable, dreaming of Paris. The more famous version of the song was recorded by Edith Piaf in 1954.
And here's the trailer for this wonderful film:
