Sharon Jones Better Watch Her Back!
I love the whole neo-soul movement (and it's cousins neo-funk and neo-blues) but this track from LA based Fitz and The Tantrums is one of the best I've heard in the past few years. More classically retro than Amy Winehouse or Raphael Saadiq and less funky than Sharon Jones, it harkens back to the old days of Motown while managing to bring in the pop soul of 70's bands like The Spinners with a bit of campy Tom Jones. (And the first track I've heard off of soon to be released Volume 2 is so wonderfully reminiscent of early Hall and Oates, I just about swooned.)
The debut EP Songs For A Breakup-Volume 1 was recorded in Fitz's living room using an old organ he bought for $50 bucks and then layering each additional instrument on top of it. But once Fitz put together a touring band, rumor's began to circulate that these guys really bring it Live!
