Sunday Morning With The Times.
I am always on the lookout for new songs to accompany my obsession with Sunday mornings....homemade breakfast, pot of coffee, big-fat-paper and lots of music. So I a went a little crazy when I first heard this song because it's perfect Sunday Morning fare.
Blair Gimma (aka just Blair) is a young singer-songwriter from New Orleans who now resides in, where else? Brooklyn. The excellent music blog Aquarium Drunkard has been touting her for a couple of years but it wasn't until I threw some of her new songs on a recent post CMJ Music Conference mix, that I really heard how she stood out in a crowd.
Blair can rock when she wants to (she released an EP of covers that included "Jesus" by The Velvet Underground and "Androgynous" by The Replacements) but on this track, she quietly commands your attention. She has a relaxed voice that reminds me of early Sinead O'Connor (without all the edge) or Sarah McLachlan (with some edge). It's the kind of song you find yourself singing in your head without realizing you had paid all that much attention to it... going back, listening again, and again. THAT kind of song.
Her first full length album Die Young was due out in August, then October, and now has been pushed back til January 2009. We're pretty sure that whatever the reason, it will be worth the wait.
Til then, here's that track we can't stop listening to :
Although the new record isn't out yet, you can purchase her 2007 4 song EP Pluto on iTunes.
