Teardrops

The Song That Built The Buzz.

The South London quartet The Xx are about as hot as a band can get. So hot, they are in danger of the dreaded cynical backlash.

But not from us...we think their debut album is one of the standouts of 2009. It's neo 'slow-dance' soul and it's addictive, in large part due to the juxtaposition of two diametrically opposed lead vocals- Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim. Depending on which order you first hear them in (for me it was Romy and then Oliver on "Islands"), you are sort of shocked and delighted when the second voice kicks in. Each is downright seductive and sexy in a barely there, almost ethereal way (and yes, they remind me of The Cocteau Twins).

At barely 20 years old, they're not even old enough to remember that band but they've already proven their ability to understand and reinterpret the past. The song that started all the buzz over in the UK is this one, a cover of Womack and Womack's 1988 "Teardrops'', which sadly  is NOT on their debut album.  It's so good I thought I'd share it with you:

After playing several blogged about shows last week in NYC during the CMJ Marathon, they are back touring in Europe before they return to the states on 11/11.
