Discovery Squandered. Thrice.
There is no excuse for me just now getting around to Cotton Jones. I squandered three opportunities to see them in the last year: SXSW, ACL and now CMJ.
I was initially drawn to the name- though these days that can be a dangerous approach when it comes to bands-but Cotton Jones just conjured up for me the epitome of a great southern band- and as a southern gal who once fell for a boy named Cotton, I was all in...so as I was putting together our post CMJ playlist this weekend, the name popped up again and ended up derailing me for an hour as I finally listened to their recent album Paranoid Cocoon.
The duo of Michael Nau and Whitney McGraw hails from rural Maryland and their music feels exactly like the picture on their MySpace Page. Picnic Table, Tire Swing, Garden Shack, Country Yard, Summer Field, Abandoned Van. It's laid back but never simple and is in fact, very richly layered.
As I was listening to the album, this track really struck me and I scribbled down these notes: "The Wallkmen get rural".
As strange a comparison as that may seem, if you are a fan of the The Walkmen's mellower sounds, see if you don't hear what I mean.
