Kings Of Convenience : Boat Behind

You're The Wind Surfer Crossing The Ocean - I'm The Boat Behind.
So we meet again after several years
Several years of separation
Moving on, moving around
Did we spend this time chasing the other's tail?
So begins "Boat Behind", the 5th track on Kings Of Convenience's third studio album Declaration of Dependence which was released on Tuesday. It's been five years since the band released the critically acclaimed Riot On An Empty Street and fans have been chomping at the bit to get at the duo's new effort.
If you don't know this band, they should in no way be confused with their rowdier name bending Kings Of Leon. Well, ok, that's an understatement. The Norwegian duo live in a musical space occupied by high harmony and pillowy soft melodies that float in an out or your subconscious with just enough bounce to keep you from getting too dreamy. I tend to think of them as a modern day Norwegian Simon & Garfunkel with a bossa nova twist. They are all -geeky-and-cool at the same time.
During those several years of separation, the duo released a surprisingly good album of dance remixes entitled Versus and frontman Erlend Oye has been busy getting all famous with his folky electronica project The Whitest Boy Alive...all by way of saying that I wouldn't have held it against them if they'd gone off in a more bouncy, dance-y direction.
Thankfully they didn't. In fact, the album feels even more restrained and paired down than their last. It's what they do best and what separates them from the myriad of indie folk-pop troupes out there who can all start to sound a bit alike. Kings Of Convenience is a band you can identify from note 1. My only complaint is that the album does tend to get a little snoozy in it's last act and might have been best capped at 10 songs. Yes, it's perfect music for a rainy fall afternoon but I don't want to actually fall asleep. That said, the first half of the album is stellar!
I love this song for it's ability to literally carry the lyrics on its' back. It's a simple song about a guy trying to keep up with a girl he feels he can never really have and the song skips and floats along with that breathless feeling of trying to catch up.
