Fanfarlo. In Absentia.
When you have to miss The CMJ Music Marathon in NYC, what do you do? Well, you live vicariously.
Since I can't be in two places at once, I stayed up late last night reading the #CMJ Twitter Feeds. Less you doubt the power of Twitter, it's a real time snapshot into what people are thinking and feeling at the very moment that they think it and feel it. It's about as unfiltered as music 'news' can get. Even I get lost in the moment when I Tweet from great live shows- and unabashedly blur the lines between music fan and music critic.
So, no first hand review of the awesomeness that no doubt occurred at last night's Brooklyn Vegan showcase at The Music Hall Of Williamsburg with none other than The Antlers and Fanfarlo, two of The MusicFile's favorite new bands.
Instead, I present you my compilation Twitter Feed (albeit slightly edited) that occurred leading up to, during and after the Fanfarlo show. (No @twitter names have been included to protect the innocent.)
Fanfarlo on stage at MHOW after long set change, starting off as a sweet little acoustic trio/ Fanfarlo at MHOW. Bingo!/ Keys, acoustic guitar, bass, violin, trumpet, mandolin, musical saw, percussion and 6 part vocals? LOVE. Fanfarlo/ Oh, and melodica/ And everyone is playing multiple instruments/ This is the most beautiful music I've heard in ages/ Is there a finer musical saw player in pop than Fanfarlo's Cathy Lucas? I'm betting no/ Watching a mustache contest. No wait, it's the band Fanfarlo/ Fanfarlo, tight arrangements lots of space in their music. Mandolins, saws and all/ Could get only a few pix of Fanfarlo. The place is jam packed/ Fanfarlo: I liked this band a lot more when they were called Arcade Fire/ Fanfarlo killin it/ Crowd demands an encore. Fanfarlo back on stage/ The crowd is spinning plastic tubes courtesy of Fanfarlo. The tubes have a siren whir while the band plays their encore. A great night/ Fanfarlo blew me away/ Fanfarlo got it DONE tonight at CMJ at Williamsburg Hall of Music/ Fitting end to a great nite of music w Fanfarlo. Ceased witty banter in awe of the musically, geographically polygamous 5-piece/ Fanfarlo live, finally... What to say ? Maybe simply that it was beautiful and that I'm glad to see them again tomorrow :)/
I sure hope they played this song. It's the standout lead off track from their debut albumReservoir. (10/12/09)
