The Raveonettes Are Back With A Bang!
I first fell for The Raveonettes in late 2003 when I heard a dense, fuzzy song called "That Great Love Sound" from their debut album Chain Gang Of Love. I was fascinated by the story behind these songs, all recorded in B-Flat Major using 3 chords or less and all under 3 minutes. And the sound? It was like The Jesus and Mary Chain had collided with The Shirells. Fifties and sixties pop re-done in an avante-garde haze of accessible distortion from a male/female duo hailing from Denmark. This is why I love music!
For six years and three albums, I have followed Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo as they stood on the brink of super stardom. I have never understood why their songs aren't on every radio station across the country. Seriously, why is commercial radio still so f'ed up?
Their 4th studio album came out on 10/6/09 and I think it's their best yet- blasting out of the gate with a song simply called "Bang!". And this song? I might actually be addicted to it. It's got it's groove on in so many ways. It's sexy and dark beneath it's catchy surface, revealing a relationship torn apart by drug addiction and overdose.
"And every time you overdose I rush to intensive care / Another sad eye stare before you disappear / If this is the last dance, if this is the last dance / then save it for me baby."
This is not about a prom night gone wrong but the slipping away of a life...the FINAL dance. It's classic Raveonettes- to take an iconic Donna Summer title and turn it into their very own little Fellini film.
We had planned to see The Raveonettes play at The Parish in Austin, TX a few weeks ago during Austin City Limits because as far as live shows go, they shred it; and I mean that in the best possible way. Due to some immigration snafu, they had to cancel but I am happy to report they are in the USA now touring 'til mid-November.
