Let The Wild Rumpus Start!
Where The Wild Things Are opens in theatres everywhere on Friday 10/16 and I predict one of the biggest openings in moviedom history. I don't care how old you are, you want to see this movie. The trailer blew me away with it's use of Arcade Fire's song "Wake Up", one of the best songs ever written about the loss of childhood innocence:
"If the children don't grow up
Our bodies get bigger but our hearts get torn up
We're just a million little gods causing rainstorms
Turning every good thing to rust
I guess we'll just have to adjust"
I literally get chills every time I see an ad for this film, just because of the sheer power of this song:
Sooooo, I was pretty disappointed when I heard the song wasn't actually going to be IN the film and the entire soundtrack was being done by Karen O of the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs (also known as the ex girlfriend of producer Spike Jonze). I am one of those people who just can't get into the YYY's so I didn't have high hopes but sometimes I like it when I am wrong!
I am really loving this soundtrack. It shows a more mellow, playful Karen O without the screeching voice and angry energy and while it doesn't have that Wow! factor of Arcade Fire, I get that the kids have to like it too.
And it turns out that "the kids" in the band are a mighty impressive bunch as well:
Bradford Cox (Deerhunter)
Brian Chase and Nick Zinner (YYYs)
Dean Fertita ( The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs)
Aaron Hemphill (Liars)
Greg Kurstin (The Bird and the Bee)
Jack Lawrence (The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs)
Oscar Michel (Gris Gris)
Imaad Wasif (New Folk Implosion, Alaska)
They all share songwriting credits on the soundtrack and have ended up producing what might best be called a very cool super group, complete with a children's choir. It wouldn't be a stretch to call them "Arcade Fire Lite".
I can't wait to see these songs married to the visuals but regardless, this is a soundtrack I will actually keep listening to, long after the film has left theatres. Here's one of my favorite tracks:
