Dimestore Diamond

Can You Feel The Live?

I didn't think I liked The Gossip all that much, but I kept hearing that they were the kind of band that once you see live, you're hooked for life, so when I found out they would be playing at The 9:30 Club in D.C. last week when I was in town, I was psyched. For about a day. Turns out I couldn't stick around for the extra night but got home in time to check out the whole concert on NPR's All Song's Considered. They were doing a live webstream with Bob Boilen (who didn't much like the band) and Carrie Brownstein (from Sleater-Kinney who adores them) providing commentary. Oh yeah, this was gonna be good!

The Gossip (now just called Gossip, I think?) have been around since 1999 and their music lives on the outer edges, both visually and musically, of what one might consider commercially acceptable taste. Lead singer Beth Ditto can't really sing all that well but then again, "all my favorite singers couldn't sing" as David Berman of Silver Jews once penned. I read one critic describe  Ditto's voice as Dolly Parton meets Janis Joplin. Ok, I can work with that.

What I wasn't prepared for is how much this concert would blow me away. Even though I couldn't SEE it, I could FEEL all the swagger and the sweat and the removing of clothing items. They opened with this track which was so tight and fun, I flipped. Liked the whole thing so much I finally downloaded their new album Music For Men which is their first on Columbia Records and produced by Rick Rubin (man that dude is branching out-from The Avett Brothers to The Gossip-who knew?)

Check 'em out with an open mind and see them live (or at least feel them live!) on NPR's Webstream here.

I think I have finally found a replacement for my rocker chick Sleater-Kinney void!
