Saturday Morning Flashback:2003
It seems hard to believe that The White Stripes have been around long enough to be flashback fodder but the garage-y blues rock duo actually formed in 1997- so here they sit at the precipice of an unlikely thirteen year anniversary.
I wasn't from Detroit and I was cutting edge in the late 90's so it wasn't until Elephant came out in 2003 and TMF co-founder Losaida put a little song called "Seven Nation Army'' on a mix for me that I first heard The Stripes. I still consider it their best track and Elephant their best album and I quickly grew addicted to "Ball and Biscuit", their cover of "I Don't Know What To Do With Myself" and "The Hardest Button To Button".
But when JenCad played this track last weekend in Austin as we were trying to psych ourselves up for a day in the rain and the mud at Austin City Limits, it took me a while to place it. "Is this from the new Dead Weather album?" (Jack White's new side project). "No silly, it's from Elephant."
Not only did it make me go back and listen to the whole album when I got home but now I can't get enough of this track. It's so great when you hear a song out of context and it makes you fall in love with it all over again-as if it's brand new. It's a straight ahead rock track with less blues than your typical Stripes song and with it's accessible refrain of "I get nervous when she comes around", it's the adult version of adolescent schoolyard crushes.
From now on, it will always be the prefect pre-concert track that sets the mood for great live music!
Enjoy...
