The Future of Music Is... Oh Big Surprise, About The Music!
For those of you who follow us on Twitter, you know that I was tweeting away ad nauseum Monday and Tuesday from The Future Of Music Coalition in D.C.
What a treat it was to hang out with hundreds of other people who all passionately care about where the music business is headed and how the digital world continues to change and impact every single one of us; from artists and musicians, to journalists, to policy makers, to labels, managers, bloggers, promoters...and fans.
While the focus of the summit was clearly on government policy and the changing biz side of music, it was the artists who kept it real and reminded us that at the end of the day, it's really all about the music and the role it plays in our communities, in our culture and in our individual lives.
Erin McKeown is a singer/songwriter who spoke on several panels who kept bringing us back to that reality- reminding me time and again that artists have to first and foremost stay true to themselves and not get caught up in the latest Twitter, FB or funding fad. I was so impressed with her as a person, that I have now sought out her music and am happy to report that not only is she a great role model for the industry, she's a great talent.
I had heard her name over the last few years but never spent any time with her music. If the last few days taught me anything, it's just how many great artists there are out there that I still haven't discovered. And how great is that?
...So I give you a sneak peak at Erin McKeown, who's 7th album Hundreds Of Lions comes out 10/13/09 on Righteous Babe Records, that little label started by Ani DiFranco, who was perhaps THE pioneer in DIY music career management, long before anyone knew what to call it!
