Lust For Life

Simplicity Gets Complicated.

Ok, let's start with what would seem like the obvious. A song called "Lust For Life" by a band named Girls on an album entitled Album would tend to lead one down the anticipation path of adolescent simple-dom. Well, yes... and no.

This San Fran based duo's songs at first blush feel simple in the same way all those early Beach Boys pop gems did. But as much as they hark back to that basic  "California" 60's sound, deeper musical intricacies reveal themselves brilliantly after several listens. I am reminded of the off kilter pop genius of Elvis Costello mingled with the tongue and cheekiness of Jonathan Richman with a big dose of low-fi punkdom. It's lusty and angst ridden and a tad bit juvenile (are they toying with us?)  but damn if I am not drawn further and further into their screwed up slacker world.

This track, which also appeared on an earier EP, was the one that got them labeled as one of our Top Bands To Watch In 2009. It actually annoyed me the first time I heard it... but I still hit replay. Trust me, it is so addictive it may surprise you. Just see if you aren't humming this line for the next few weeks:

"I wish I had a suntan. I wish I had a pizza and a bottle of wine. I wish I had a beach house so we could make a big fire every night."

Stupidly brilliant!
