Out Of Time

Bringing Blur Into Focus

Like many Americans, I really discovered blur in reverse, based primarily on my love of all things Gorillaz. Both are the brain child of Daman Albarn, arguably one of the most interesting, creative and diverse musicians and producers of the last 20 years. After I had worn a hole in 2005's Demon Days (by those devilish fictitious Gorillaz characters), I began to go back in time and dabble in blur.

Blur was huge in Britain in the 1990's, often going head to head with Oasis for the crown of "kings of Brit-Pop". For some reason, they never really made it big in the U.S., but thankfully Virgin Records has released a fantastic 2 disc compilation that's a great entry point into the band, particularly for Gorillaz fans. Though the set leaves out some of their bigger UK hits, it shows the artier progression of the band from the guitar driven brit-pop days to the lo-fi, electronic and atmospheric sounds that hint at Albarn's future direction.

The band reunited this summer for several concerts (including headlining at Glastonbury), though rumors of a true reunion/new record seem just that- rumors.

As I wait patiently for the 3rd Gorillaz album (rumored to be out in early 2010 and titled Plastic Beach), this blur retrospective is filling the void nicely- especially this beautiful track with it's stripped down vibe. Originally appearing on  the band's last album, 2003's Think Tank, it includes nods to african and middle eastern music and slides right into any Albarn mix.
