The Long Hall

A Non Animal Collective.

The softest part of my musical heart has always been reserved for the big, harmony laden, melody rich, slightly alt country songs. The kind that bands like The Jayhawks, Golden Smog, Whiskeytown, Wilco and Old 97's made careers out of on the 90's. Careers that not enough people noticed. Three of these band are long defunct (though Rhett Miller's solo career is keeping the '97's flame alive).

Thank God The Minus 5 still dabbles in this genre and on their 8th studio album, which releases tomorrow on Yep Roc Records, they more than dip their toe in the water. The group has always been a highly fluid collaborative, anchored by Scott McAughey of Young Fresh Fellows (who also have a new effort out this July) and Peter Buck of R.E.M..

On this effort, conceived and recorded in Portland, Oregon they bring in local members of M. Ward's band, Norfolk & Western, The Decemberists, and the Shee Bee Gees. It's a thoroughly modern Portland affair- the album title and artwork inspired by the main thoroughfare in the city's Alberta Arts District -and further evidence that Portland has replaced Seattle as the harbinger of musical creativity in the Pacific Northwest.

Don't miss this gem of an album and thanks to Yep Roc for making this Mp3 available, one of the standouts on the album.
