Anya Marina : It's All The Same To Me
Thursday, July 02, 2009
Anya Marina's a bit of a renaissance gal. A bookish actor/ turned DJ /turned song writer from San Diego, she's taken the west coast by storm and is spreading eastward.
First thrust into the spotlight with a song on Grey's Anatomy (which is actually becoming a bit of a negative in my book), she then went on to have another song featured on Gossip Girl and oh, did I mention that the supervision for those shows is done by Chop Shop who also signed her to a record deal? Ah, synergy.
No worries, it's the music that matters and Anya has surrounded herself with great talent. Her sophomore album was produced by Britt Daniel of Spoon and Brian Karscig, of Louis XIV. The result is superbly produced jazzy pop with an edge. Listening to the album, you're not quite sure if she's the good girl (Jewel) or the bad girl (Liz Phair).
We saw her perform this song at SXSW this year and loved it but the studio version far surpasses it. I absolutely dig the use of horns on this track- it keeps the song from going over the edge into silliness and imbues it with, dare I say, a kickin' Tom Waits vibe.
