Elvis Costello : Down Among The Wines And Spirits

You Can't Take The Elvis Costello Out of Elvis Costello.
To some extent it doesn't matter what Elvis Costello sings; his one in a million voice will always instantly call to mind my obsession with his first 3 albums- the trifecta of 1977's My Aim Is True, 1978's This Year's Model and 1979's Armed Forces. The fact that there are 25 albums between them and the release last week of Secret, Profane & Sugarcane doesn't alter my image of him as the angry young rocker who broke the mold and forever changed my perception of what music could be.
Costello has proved my stereotype wrong time and time again and still I cling, ignoring all the signs of his vast range and influence. Perhaps he is no more aptly described than by my friend Corey Dubrowa as a "one man Rock-ipedia" in his recent review of the new album for Paste Magazine. Yet even when he teams back up with T Bone Burnett for a Nashville session and an album that sits squarely in the country genre, he is STILL my "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes" Elvis.
I know that hardly seems logical but it's the voice and the phrasing that make Costello, Costello and even Nashville can't take that out of him.
Costello is playing a solo show at Bonnaroo Music And Arts Festival in Manchester, TN this weekend, surely a great setting and format for him to showcase both the range and cohesion of those 30 years of songwriting.
(As I listen to one of my favorite tracks from the new record, I can almost hear its' blazing punk rock alter ego version.)
