Merge SCORES! Parties and Concerts and Covers, Oh My!
While buzz abounds for the REALLY BIG music festivals this summer- Bonnaroo, Lolla, Pitchfork, ACL, All Points West, etc.- they are all starting to look alike to me. Maybe I am just getting jaded or I've been to one to many of these dust bowl heat fests...which might be why I have a strong hankering to go to XX Merge in small town Carrboro, N.C. July 22-26th.
It's really a big fat birthday party for Merge Records who turns 20 this year. All of the shows (except for Sunday's finale) will be held at the Cat's Cradle, a truly awesome small music club outside of Chapel Hill.
If anyone deserves this kind of bash, it's Merge; a label with impeccable taste who takes risks and usually gets it right. They just might be today's best independent label.
Rumors abound that Arcade Fire will make an appearance but even if they don't, what a lineup! Highlights include Spoon, M. Ward, Destroyer,The Magnetic Fields and Conor Oberst. You can see full details of the event Here!
In addition to the 5 day party, the label is releasing some very interesting compilations. This is one my favorites. It features some of today's best bands covering some of Merge's best artists. In this case St. Vincent and The National (2 non-merge artists) covering one of Crooked Fingers most beautiful songs.
