The Great Defector

Talking Heads Called. They Want Their Sound Back.

So I am driving in my car, rainy Friday out on the East End of Long Island when this song comes on the local "progressive" radio station. Hmmm. New David Byrne? Old Talking Heads?  Maybe David Byrne with Crowded House? I'm confused and not really paying attention but my ears perk up.  I hear lyrics with a few rabbit references (and you know my obsession with rabbit based songs). Then I hear  the DJ say something about a band from Ireland.

Go home, check out playlist for WEHM online and there it is: "The Great Defector" by Bell X1. I remember hearing about this band several years back when they had a song on The O.C. but I hadn't heard a thing from them til now.  They have a new album out. BIG in the Emerald Isle and released State-side in March.

Feels like one of those bands that's got enough quirkiness to be considered alternative but that you can secretly love for it's great big hooks (see Gomez). Gonna give the whole album a good listen over the weekend.

Until I do, this seems like a pretty great song to kick off the weekend. Amazon has it as a free download!
