Album Of They Year?
The third full length album from Brooklyn's Grizzly Bear was released on Tuesday and it's yet another quantum leap forward for the band. Grizzly Bear's rise from uber-underground well kept secret to the frontrunners of indie music creativity seems like a lifetime but is in fact a mere five years. I didn't get hooked until 2006's Yellow House and as much as I love that album, Veckatimest blows it out of the water.
After several listens the words stunning, surprising, layered, creative, subtle (yet dramatic!) and downright jaw dropping come to mind. Surely it is already an early contender for album of the year for this and many other music blogs. It is a rare record that warrants what I call "the 3-play". Just put it on and listen to it once and it's impossible not to hit replay at least twice. Try and stop. You can't.
There are numerous standout tracks on the record: "Southern Point", "All We Ask", "Cheerleader" among them. But it is this track that best represents the bands' genius. A nod to everyone from The Beach Boys to Morrissey to Radiohead, it is a song that defies both convention and categorization and yet is widely accessible. It is ancient and yet modern. Put simply, it soars.
I am seriously regretting that I didn't get tickets to see one of their two sold out performances at Town Hall in New York tonight and tomorrow night. Craigslist perhaps? Or maybe I just stay in and go for the 4-play.
