Cornman

A Mexican Bouillabaise With A Little Extra Lagniappe!

While many of my friends are set to enjoy their second helping of JazzFest in New Orleans this weekend, I, alas, have only my memories from last weekend. But one of those memories is still kicking strong.

Spending an afternoon dancing my tush off to Kinky was not something I had planned on doing but my old college friend Lindsay swore that they were a band I should check out. Turns out she had been a fan of this Mexican group from her days living in San Diego and often uses Kinky as the soundtrack for her fashion shows. She described them as dancing Mexican jumping beans. I was in. She was right. They surprised the heck out of the enormous crowd on the main stage last Sunday, thousands of whom were there staking out their spot for Dave Matthews. Most of whom had never heard of Kinky.

I have no idea why this band had never crossed my radar. I love Latin inspired music. I love dance music. I love electronica. Kinky is all three... plus a little somethin' extra- what New Orleanians call "lagniappe"... or maybe it was Snow who described them best; "ethnic techno".

But labels always throw people. I'm just saying.

Give Kinky a listen. Make some Margarita's. Prepare thyself for Cinco de Mayo. Dance around like a Mexican jumping bean. You'll get the picture.

This track is from their 2002 debut album but do checkout their latest album, 2008's Barracuda; equally jumping.
