Get Into Your Clothes, You Can Sleep When You're Dead
New Orleans jazz singer Judith Owen wowed the mostly local crowd yesterday on the civilized Lagniappe Stage at the 40th annual JazzFest. The Welsh born songstress has the wit and sass of a Kate Winslet and the musical chops of a Randy Newman. At times, her voice reminds me of Fiona Apple. Damn, she can sing but what wins the crowd over is her humor. She throws out one liners in between songs with a wink and a nod and just a touch of the dramatic. "Come on people, give me a 2-4" as she requests some finger snap accompaniment from the crowd. "If I can't get it here, I might as well be in Nebraska".
The Lagniappe Stage may be my favorite gem of the fest. It sits in the middle of the paddock at the fairgrounds, surrounded by boxwoods and roses, a bar serving trays of ice cold freshly shucked oysters, draft beer and clean restrooms. And best of all, it never seems to get overly crowded. It's far from the madding crowd.

All of these things combine to create a nice pit stop on the long road thru Jazzfest. One must keep going. Life is too short. There is too much good music. I can sleep when I'm dead.
