Hats Rule at JazzFest

Gotta Get Me Some Noon.

One of the first people we ran into on Day 1 of JazzFest was a friend of a friend who was decked out in her New Orleans fest finery: large flowery hat, lots of bohemian accessories and the requisite big gulp size cup that was surely filled with something a bit stronger than the iced tea and lemonade it purported to hold.

"Hey, how ya doin'?"

She raised her cup in the air, waving it at us she said "I'm gooood honey. I got me some noon." And with that she was gone, lost into the crowds of party revelers on a picture perfect day at the fairgrounds.

Once we had acquired our own "noon" (strawberry iced tea with a shot of vodka from our fest flask), we were good to go...on the hunt for some of the great local music that makes this fest the standout that it is.

One of the early highlights was Amanda Shaw & The Cute Guys on The Gentilly Stage. Shaw is a mere 18 years old but plays the fiddle and sings with the soul of Kate Bush  and the swagger of a Dixie Chick. She blasted through a set that proved her range as an artist from a blistering fun cover of The Clash's "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" to this standout track that is equal parts cajun and old school funk.

The song seems apropo of the day as several festival goers hit that proverbial brick wall that signals it's time to go home. Too much noon and you miss the moon.
