Rocking The Solar Blue Grass
While most of the music blogoshphere was sweltering in the California desert this weekend for the Coachella Music Festival, I was in beautiful Savannah, Ga. hanging out on the lawn in Forsyth Park, drinking strawberry water with lemon (it's a southern thing!) and listening to a band that almost no one has heard of.
The Cordoroy Road hail from Athens, Ga. and sit on the musical spectrum where Drive By Truckers, Reckless Kelly and The Avett Brothers collide.
I first heard their name a few years back when they played some opening sets for The Avett Brothers. Then, they were two and now they are four. Originally from central Kentucky, Drew Carman and Dylan Solise started off playing simple yet aggressive mountain bluegrass but the addition of drums and bass have moved them to a fuller, more well rounded sound. It's the kind of music that immediately makes you want to kick off your shoes and dance around in a circle.
Recently signed to Athens' Mule Train records, a label dedicated to the "highest environmentally sound practices available", they put their money where their mouth was by playing under a solar powered mini stage at Savannah's Earth Day Celebration.
The band has just released the 5 song EP Just One Drop with new album Love Is War scheduled for release in summer 2009. Both were produced by John Keane (REM, Widespread Panic, Uncle Tupelo), which is bound to give these very talented guys a nice platform for exposure.
If you get a chance, see them live while they are still under the radar and touring throughout the Southeast-they have some of that same amazing Avett Brothers energy!
You can hear a few more of their tracks on MySpace.
