Bearded Trees and Buttery Foods
Neko Case walked on stage last night at The Savannah Music Festival and proclaimed her new love for the city she was visiting for the first time. "Oh Savannah. You with your bearded trees and your buttery foods. Thank you for having us."
I am not sure I have ever heard such a perfect one line description of the town I call my second home.
It was a great night to be in Savannah as the city was treated to a double bill the caliber of which rarely makes it to this town. Crooked Fingers and Neko Case on the same night? Oh, be still my heart.
I am not sure why Savannah is not a regular tour stop for independent artists and the two fantastic weeks a year of The Savannah Music Festival just aren't enough! I swear I am on a mission to change that but in the meantime, it was a delight to see a packed house respond to both of these artists. Although Neko was the headlining act, it was Eric Bachmann of Crooked Fingers who really surprised people. I am guessing that most of the people in the audience had never heard of him and his opening set (despite an overbearing mic on his back up singer) was a delight.

The MusicFile has long been a supporter of Bachmann. He is a singer who delivers tenderness and strength in the same breath with his mix of Neil Diamond meets Bruce Springsteen (circa Nebraska) voice. When you see him on stage, you instantly feel that he is an old soul. This was never truer than when he closed out the set with this song, off of his 2006 solo album To The Races. And although he didn't play the second song I have included, it was the one that got me hooked on him in the first place. Worth sharing!
I think the Carolina native won a lot of new fans last night in Savannah, Georgia.
