Bela Fleck : Thula Mama

Throw Down Your Heart. Pick Up Your Banjo.
One of the performances I am most excited to see this weekend at The Savannah Music Festival is Bela Fleck's African Project. Fleck, arguably our greatest living banjo player, traveled to Africa in 2005 to study the history of the banjo, believed to have originated in Gambia as the "akonting".
The result of his travels and his collaboration with local musicians across Tanzia, Gamba, Uganda and Mali is the just released album Throw Down Your Heart. The work also lives as a documentary film.
It is nothing short of a testament to the power of music to inspire and unite us and a reminder that we are all musically connected across time and space.
Trust me, you will never think of the banjo the same way again.
You can view a clip of the film here:
On this track, South African singer/songwriter Vusi Mahlesela sings "Thula Mama", a tribute to all of the women in his life who showed bravery while enduring Apartheid.
