Eels : Things the Grandchildren Should Know
Tuesday, September 29, 2009

Mark Oliver Everett's book came out in Paperback today in the U.S. and it reminded me to head to the book store and pick it up. It's been heralded as one of the best things ever written by a relative rock star. It tells the tale of a family literally ripped apart and while it may not be an easy read, I am sure it will contain the bittersweet insights and dead on observations that he instills into nearly every EELS song.
The announcement jogged my memory to go back and have a good long listen to the song that inspired the book (or is it vice versa?). It's one of those songs that comes at the dead end of a two CD 16 track set and it might be the best song on an album of great songs. Telling the tale of a man looking back on his life, it manages to perfectly capture the balance of regret, acceptance and gratitude.
Have a listen and see if you don't agree... the Amazon link below is to the book!
So in the end i'd like to say
That i'm a very thankful man
I tried to make the most of my situations
And enjoy what i had
I knew true love and I knew true passion,
And the difference between the two.
I had some regrets but if I had to do it all again,
Well it's something I'd like to do.
