Buildings & Mountains

Big Stargazer Pop. Gosh it's hard to get that sound right. Few bands do it consistently well but when they do, stardom follows.

The Republic Tigers are just such a band. They manage to pull off multi-layered vocals with truck loads of harmony without sounding like a cliche. They are everything that I wish The Fray and The Killers would be.

The songs are interesting, majestic and unique, yet collectively hold together as "their sound". The big orchestration works, calling to mind Queen, XTC and on a few tracks what I refer to as Radiohead-lite. But it's the melodies and the hooks that will allow this band to move into the mainstream without sacrificing their indie cred.

One of the last bands that we saw perform at SXSW, they hooked us far past their "we've been featured on Gossip Girl"  buzz would have hinted. Lead singer Kenn Jankowski is a star, commanding the stage like an A-lister (and as friend Corey DuBrowa noted, looking eerily like Ian Curtis from Joy Division).

The first band to sign with new label Chop Shop records, they were one of the pleasant surprises of the festival.

This track is one of their most accessible but don't stop there, their whole 2008 debut album is great .
