It's All About The Candi!
I miss Drew, aka The Skipper, one of our original biz partners here at The MusicFile. We used to sit around and swap songs and mixes and music stories in my apartment in the East Village. (Ah, remembered nostalgia for the mid 2000's.) So when I got an email from him yesterday titled "New Artist", I had to make a decision whether to put it in my already piled high 'music i need to listen to' stack or tackle it now.
For some reason I chose the latter. Good thing. What a great song- from a UK band whose name I had seen flashing across a few blog postings over the last six months but, here's where the big sigh comes in, hadn't gotten to yet. It's from their self titled debut album which came out in September '09 and features a ten part animated series entitled The Adventures of One eskimO...and his band (a penguin, a giraffe and a monkey). Animation was done by Passion Pictures of Gorillaz fame.
There aren't enough bands right now doing this sort of alternative midstream sound. It's music where fans of Gomez, Dave Matthews and John Mayer can live peaceably side by side. The song title is a reference to the fabulous miss Candi Staton whose 1976 song "He Called Me Baby" is the backbone of the chorus... it makes the song. It's the 2nd Candi Staton re-birth to make my ears happy in the last few months, the other being Florence & The Machine's fantastic cover of "Where Is The Love?".
It's all about the Candi right now!
One eskimO is on tour in the states now, opening for Gomez (a ha!) and culminating with a coveted slot at The Coachella Music Festival in Indio, California on April 18th.

Adding to the history - Kandi is based on a song called He Called Me Baby. While the song was recorded by Candi Staton in 1976 as an R&B song, it was first recorded commercially in 1963 (I believe) by Patsy Cline as a country song. Although I do not have the original date, the song was written int he early 60s by Harlan Howard who, as a man, first recorded the song as She Called Me Baby. I love the interconnections!
